Wood shavings are one of the most popular forms of horse bedding and offer the following benefits:
- Dust-extracted, thereby reducing the risk of respiratory complaints for both horses and humans
- Quick and easy to work with
- Can be used as a deep litter bedding or with rubber matting
- Free draining, yet highly absorbent
- Made from softwood timber to guarantee a soft, well insulated bed
- Provides a firm surface with little movement
- Less material required to make a bed, which means there is a smaller muck heap to dispose of
- Supplied in compressed, plastic wrapped bales of approximately 25kg that can be safely stored outside

Superflake Shavings
These are top quality large flake shavings, which are dusted extracted and sold in large bale format.
Aubiose is a hemp-based bedding that is highly absorbent with very low dust levels.
Belvoir Bedding
A dust-extracted, chopped straw product that has been treated to make it unpalatable to horses.
Manufactured from selected recycled whitewood fibre.
Rubber Matting
Although rubber matting is more expensive than other forms of bedding initially, it can offer time and money savings over the longer term. For example, it allows you to reduce the total amount of bedding used by using a thinner layer of straw on top of the matting. You also save time and effort when disposing of old bedding because of the lower volume produced.
Straw
Straw is the traditional form of horse bedding and is very absorbent. Cook’s Farm Shops sells straw bales produced from our own farm and other selected local farms. We carefully monitor the quality of the material and store it under cover to ensure that it is dust and mould-free.
Care should be taken when using straw for bedding as it is highly palatable to horses. The main disadvantage of straw is that it results in relatively high volumes of waste bedding, which means more time and cost for stable cleaning and manure disposal.
