Electric fencing for horses and ponies

Electric fencing is economical to set up and maintain compared with the traditional wooden post and rail fencing. It is also much quicker to install. Electric fencing in combination with wooden straining posts at the corners can provide an effective semi-permanent fencing when required.

Here are a few tips when planning the use electric fencing for horses
- Use a wide woven tape so that the wind will blow through. This will ensure that the fence will not move in blustery conditions
- Use a wide tape of 20 – 40mm in green or brown to make the fence highly visible to your horse
- For semi-permanent or permanent electric fencing, use wooden stakes and two to three strands of tape or rope
- Use thicker wooden “straining” stakes at the corners of the enclosure to ensure the fence will remain correctly tensioned over time
