Both the RSPB and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) advise that year round feeding of British garden birds is preferable. Food shortages can occur at any time of year in the natural world, not just in harsh winter weather. For example, shortages of food insects can occur in prolonged periods of cold, wet weather, which, as we all know can occur outside the winter season.
